Thanks to everyone who joined the first Friendly Food CSA meeting on December 7. The young farmers from nearby Mae Tha valley and a group of Chiang Mai consumers met to talk about the importance of linking the food we eat with public and environmental health and the survival of small farms. read more

จากครั้งที่แล้วที่เราพูดถึงการเกิดวิกฤตราคาดอกไม้โดยเฉพาะดอกเบญจมาศที่ราคาตกต่ำอย่างมากจนส่งผลกระทบต่อเกษตรกรผู้ปลูกดอกในพื้นที่ตำบลเหมืองแก้ว ในครั้งนี้เราจะเป็นการทำความเข้าใจต่อความเป็นมาเป็นไปของการปลูกดอกไม้ในตำบลเหมืองแก้ว เพื่อที่จะทำความเข้าใจว่าวิกฤตดังกล่าวนี้เกิดขึ้นมาได้อย่างไร และเราจะหาทางออกจากวิกฤตนี้กันเช่นไร read more

เรื่องราวของลุงทัยนั้นเกิดจากการที่เราได้ยินชาวบ้านแถวนั้นเล่าให้ฟังว่าลุงทัยเป็นหนึ่งในเกษตรกรเพียงไม่กี่คนที่ไม่ใช้สารเคมีในการเพาะปลูก จึงทำให้เราสนใจที่จะพูดคุยกับลุงทัยถึงความเป็นมาเป็นไปที่นำไปสู่การทำเกษตรแบบที่แทบจะไม่มีใครทำในตำบลเหมืองแก้ว หรือเราอาจเรียกได้ว่าเป็น “การเกษตรนอกกระแส” ของตำบลเหมืองแก้วก็ได้ read more

ในระบบ CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) นั้นการส่งตะกร้าอาหารเป็นเสมือนสัญลักษณ์แทนคำมั่นสัญญาระหว่างเกษตรกรและผู้บริโภค ซึ่งวันนี้ Fair Earth Farm ได้ทำโครงการ CSA และส่งตะกร้าให้ลูกค้าเป็นเวลาได้สามเดือนแล้วจึงได้มีการประเมินผลการส่งตะกร้าอาหารให้ลูกค้าโดยผู้ประเมินคือคุณซาร่า ซึ่งเป็นผู้รับผิดชอบการส่งตะกร้าและติดต่อกับผู้บริโภค read more

Flower price collapse hits local farmers’ chief cash crop
ในช่วงหลายปีที่ผ่านมานี้ ดอกเบญจมาศถือเป็นพืชเศรษฐกิจที่สำคัญของชาวบ้านดอนตันมาโดยตลอด แต่ในช่วงต้นปี 2553 ที่ผ่านมาได้เกิดวิกฤตราคาดอกเบญจมาศตกต่ำอย่างที่ไม่เคยเกิดขึ้นมาก่อนซึ่งได้สร้างความเดือนร้อนให้กับชาวสวนผู้ปลูกดอกในหมู่บ้านเป็นอย่างมาก ทาง Fair Earth Farm จึงต้องการที่จะเรียนรู้ความเป็นมาเป็นไปของวิกฤตดังกล่าวเพื่อสามารถนำเสนอทางเลือกในการเกษตรที่ยั่งยืนให้กับชาวบ้านได้ต่อไปในอนาคต

“Growing More with Less”: a seminar on the System of Rice Intensification, or SRI
เมื่อวันพฤหัสที่ 5 กุมภาพันธ์ ที่ผ่านมา ทางทีมงานของ Fair Earth Farm ได้เข้าร่วมกิจกรรมสัมมนาการปลูกข้าวแบบ SRI หรือการปลูกข้าวต้นเดียวที่จัดขึ้นที่สถาบันชุมชนเกษตรกรรมยั่งยืน (Institute for Sustainable Agriculture Community-ISAC) โดยการประสานงานของสำนักงาน ECHO ภาคพื้นเอเชีย (ECHO Asia Regional Office) ซึ่งผลจากการสัมมนาทำให้เราได้ข้อคิดเห็นที่เป็นประโยชน์มากมายสำหรับการส่งเสริมการปลูกข้าวต้นเดียวต่อไปในอนาคต.

First Fair Earth Farm community farming “farmshop”
เมื่อวันเสาร์ที่ผ่านมา (30 มกราคม 2552) ทาง Fair Earth Farm ได้จัดงาน Organic Farming Farmshop ขึ้นโดยมีทั้งเพื่อนบ้านชาวดอนตัน เพื่อนชาวคะฉิ่น และเพื่อนชาวอเมริกันมาร่วมงานด้วย ซึ่งเราคาดหวังว่านี่จะเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นที่ดีสำหรับการสร้างเครือข่าย CSA ให้เกิดขึ้นในอนาคตอันใกล้นี้…
The Fair Earth team organized a participatory “farmshop” January 30 with the help of friends from Burma’s Kachin State, neighboring Dorn Tarn village, and elsewhere. We learned about planting rice — and planted some — using innovative methods, and also created a few “instant veggie beds.” read more

Kru Pratum, farmer-innovator extraordinaire!
เมื่อวันพุธที่ผ่านมา (20 ก.พ. 53) ทางทีมงานของ Fair Earth Farm ได้มีโอกาสไปเยี่ยมสวนของครูประทุม สุริยา ที่หมู่บ้านสันป่ายาง อำเภอแม่แตง จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ โดยครูประทุมนั้นเป็นเจ้าของรางวัลครูบัญชีดีเด่นระดับประเทศประจำปี 2552 เกษตรกรดีเด่นระดับจังหวัดและระดับภาคประจำปี 2550-2551 และรางวัลอื่น ๆ อีกมากมาย…
We recently had a chance to visit Kru Pratum, chemistry teacher cum organic rice farmer. Armed with a bookkeeping ledger and bucket of sprouted rice seeds, “Teacher” Pratum teaches us a way of farming that makes use of the muscles between the ears, not the muscles in the back.
