A Food Manifesto in the New York Times

The New York Times’ Opinion pages have just welcomed a new columnist and he’s  a food writer!

Mark Bittman’s debut column offers many excellent ideas about how to reform the American food system. And if the US could do it, the helpful ripples would be felt around the world.

Bittman writes that Americans have “come to recognize that our diet is unhealthful and unsafe. Many food production workers labor in difficult, even deplorable, conditions, and animals are produced as if they were widgets. It would be hard to devise a more wasteful, damaging, unsustainable system.”

To deal with that unholy Mcmess, he offers several ideas “that would make the growing, preparation and consumption of food healthier, saner, more productive, less damaging and more enduring.”
