The Build Up to the monsoon season in northern Thailand starts in March and April, with thunderstorms and sometimes hail. This evening, we got a bit of both.

Flower price collapse hits local farmers’ chief cash crop
ในช่วงหลายปีที่ผ่านมานี้ ดอกเบญจมาศถือเป็นพืชเศรษฐกิจที่สำคัญของชาวบ้านดอนตันมาโดยตลอด แต่ในช่วงต้นปี 2553 ที่ผ่านมาได้เกิดวิกฤตราคาดอกเบญจมาศตกต่ำอย่างที่ไม่เคยเกิดขึ้นมาก่อนซึ่งได้สร้างความเดือนร้อนให้กับชาวสวนผู้ปลูกดอกในหมู่บ้านเป็นอย่างมาก ทาง Fair Earth Farm จึงต้องการที่จะเรียนรู้ความเป็นมาเป็นไปของวิกฤตดังกล่าวเพื่อสามารถนำเสนอทางเลือกในการเกษตรที่ยั่งยืนให้กับชาวบ้านได้ต่อไปในอนาคต
The principal economic crop of Dorn Tarn village is flowers for the cut-flower market of Bangkok and elsewhere. Recently, the price collapsed for chrysanthemums, dropping from a high of four baht per flower in 2009 to a single baht for well-connected growers. “Growing More with Less”: a seminar on the System of Rice Intensification, or SRI
เมื่อวันพฤหัสที่ 5 กุมภาพันธ์ ที่ผ่านมา ทางทีมงานของ Fair Earth Farm ได้เข้าร่วมกิจกรรมสัมมนาการปลูกข้าวแบบ SRI หรือการปลูกข้าวต้นเดียวที่จัดขึ้นที่สถาบันชุมชนเกษตรกรรมยั่งยืน (Institute for Sustainable Agriculture Community-ISAC) โดยการประสานงานของสำนักงาน ECHO ภาคพื้นเอเชีย (ECHO Asia Regional Office) ซึ่งผลจากการสัมมนาทำให้เราได้ข้อคิดเห็นที่เป็นประโยชน์มากมายสำหรับการส่งเสริมการปลูกข้าวต้นเดียวต่อไปในอนาคต.
We attended on Feb. 25 a very interesting seminar about an innovative approach to rice growing, known as the System of Rice Intensification, or SRI. It was spearheaded by our friends at ECHO Asia and hosted by ISAC, or the Institute for Sustainable Agriculture Communities. read more

How much should a kilogram of rice cost? That’s one of the central questions of our community agriculture project. I’m not asking how much does a kg of rice cost. The question is, how much should it cost.
